Two River Theater in Red Bank is doing something a bit different for its upcoming production of Love in Hate Nation, where you can help out and paint a community mural with its collaboration with Detour Gallery on Friday, October 11.
A Love in Hate Nation Inside Two River Event in partnership with Detour Gallery
Join Artist Holly Suzanne Rader in painting the background of an 8’ x 16’ mural inspired by the characters of Love in Hate Nation, a new musical by Tony nominated writer Mr. Joe Iconis (Be More Chill). The mural will be on display at Two River Theater for public viewing during the run of the show, which starts performances on November 9!
There is no cost to participate but RSVPS are requested:

The girls are layered with paper doll outfits that don’t quite fit, kitsch Betty Crocker imagery, and street graffiti. These girls also roughly represent the characters in the play, but not literally.
About Love in Hate Nation: A turbulent rock romance set in a 1960s Juvie Hall, Love in Hate Nation uses classic “bad girl” movies as the inspiration for the story of young people caught between eras of a changing America. Sixteen-year old Susannah Son is carted off to the National Reformatory for Girls (a.k.a Nation) to get her head put on straight. There she meets the aggressively incorrigible Sheila Nail, and a relationship forms which leads to an all-out “revolution in the institution” as they attempt to break out of the boxes society has created around them. Girl Group Wall of Sound harmonies are filtered through a punk rock spirit in this rebellious and romantic new musical.
About the Artist: Holly Suzanne Rader began her fine arts career as a classically-trained portrait painter, while in recent years evolving into a sculptor and mixed media artist exploring a wide range of materials including acrylic, photo collage, wax, resin, paper mache, sequins, glitter and even candy. She is drawn to subject matter typically of vintage glamour. Bright drops of paint, glitter-enhanced photos, and high gloss finishes create a visual seduction of color and texture. The overture of her work, whether on canvas or in sculpture, evokes a playful presence of the feminine soul. While completing her MFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design, she traveled extensively and received international recognition. She was a featured artist in the 2002 “women by women” exhibition at the Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris. She was commissioned to create paintings for the 2006 scad fashion gala honoring designer Vera Wang. In 2010, the college commissioned her to create over one hundred mixed-media fiber works to be installed at their new Hong Kong campus. Cottage living magazine described her work as “blending femininity with modern form.” She has also been featured in the New York Times, the Atlanta journal constitution, and Le Monde and Le Figaro magazines.
