Reading Like a Poet
OnZoom
Thursday, July 16
7 to 9 p.m.
with Laura Cyphers

Do you ever read a poem and sense there is something you’re not getting? Do you love the language but feel frustrated that the poem doesn’t hand over its meaning in the way other genres do? Reading poetry closely—reading like a poet—is a skill. Reading word-by-word and line-by-line takes patience and time. You’re not just studying for meaning; you’re studying to learn what works and what is possible. You’re searching for the choices made and the choices that were not made. During this two-hour workshop, we study model poems in this fashion. During the first hour, we closely examine a few poems from contemporary poets as a group. During the second hour, we break into smaller groups, each group creating an annotation, or a craft-focused response, to something they learned about the poem and how the poet crafted it.
