Today is National Rescue Dog Day and to celebrate the occasion, we’re going to be highlighting some local dog rescues in-and-the-around the Jersey Shore area that you should know about.
Many of them have been established for quite some time, but regardless if they’re been around for some time, or just starting out, they’re all about helping out our four legged canine friends!
These rescues are here to help find forever homes for the adoptable pups they have in possession, so definitely check them out. On top of that, you can even volunteer to help them out in a variety of ways. From fostering, to donating time to help feed and walk them, these local rescues are passionate about doing whatever it is they can to help out dogs that are in need of finding a loving, forever home.

Rescue Ridge is a ‘last-chance’ rescue. Staffed 100% through the efforts and donations of volunteers, we find homes for animals that other shelters and people have given up on. Through the kindness of various boarding kennels and foster families, rescued animals are cared for until they find that final family to love them.

The Associated Humane Societies, founded in 1906, is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey. We comprise three shelters located in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls. Our Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park Zoo. Established in 1977, Popcorn Park Zoo is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly wildlife, exotic and farm animals, and birds.

Founded by Nancy Flint in 2009, FUR FRIENDS IN NEED lives up to its name by caring for dogs, cats, and rabbits in need.
We are a volunteer run and foster based nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization that focuses on Monmouth County, NJ and Staten Island, NY.
Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals who are ailing, abused and abandoned in our community. All of the animals we save are placed in temporary foster homes where they are nourished and nurtured, sheltered and socialized. They are also spay/neutered and receive any medical care they might need before being placed in permanent adoptive homes.
We also work to educate the general public about the importance of spay/neutering their pets to help reduce the number of unwanted animals who end up in shelters. And we believe in the humane practice of TNR (trap, neuter and return) of feral cats in those communities with responsible caretakers.

CODAR is an all-volunteer animal rescue organization based in Central New Jersey. Our mission is to rescue dogs and puppies from high kill shelters and place them in our foster care network until a permanent home is found. We rely on donations from the general public in order to operate. Our concentration on awareness is very important as we realize it is key in preventing millions of pets from being euthanized each year.
Community involvement is another area that plays a fundamental role in our important mission. We offer various programs and speaking engagements to local schools, townships and community groups on emergency preparedness and contingency plans for pets, general pet care information including the importance of pet alteration that aids in controlling animal over-population. In addition, we offer a junior volunteer program and community service hours for youth ages 10 and above. CODAR was instrumental in aiding area residents with pet assistance due to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012. We provided foster care for residents who required temporary placement for their pets and offered our assistance in collecting and distributing supplies to residents and their companion animals who were affected by the storm.

We are a group of dedicated volunteers, mostly located in Monmouth County (NJ), focused on rehoming dogs and cats. We usually have a variety of sizes and ages looking for their forever home; we continually bring in new animals to the rescue as others are adopted.
Our dogs come from shelters in the local area and the south, owner surrenders in the area, and from rescues in Puerto Rico. We do not have a shelter facility; our dogs are kept in private foster homes in Monmouth and northern Ocean counties, with just a few in boarding if necessary. Our cats are kept in private homes and at PetCo in Eatontown and at PetValu in Shrewsbury, where volunteers feed them and play with them daily.
